The 6 Types of Guest Every Haunter Meets in October

Stand in line for any haunted house around the country and you’ll find the same six people. Human psychology does something fascinating under the specific kind of pressure we experience when waiting for and walking through a haunted attraction.

Grab your bingo cards (or your favorite beverage) and give yourself a point (or take a sip) every time you encounter one of these six unmistakable characters at your haunt this week.

1. The Human Shield (and Their Unfortunate Hostage)

You can spot them from fifty paces away in the queue line. The Shield isn’t merely scared; they have converted their significant other, best friend, or sibling into a literal piece of body armor.

With two white-knuckled fists buried into the back of their partner’s hoodie, eyes clamped shut, they navigate the entire attraction by shuffle-stepping in blind terror. Every time a drop-panel clatters, they physically shove their hostage directly into the line of fire. By room three, their partner is covered in sweat, bruised ribs, and deep regret about their date night choices.

  • 💬 Signature Quote: “DON’T YOU DARE LEAVE ME, TYLER. WHAT WAS THAT? WHAT WAS THAT?!”
  • 🧟 Tell Your Scare-Actors To: Target Tyler. The Shield will eliminate themselves via pure panic.

2. The “I Don’t Scare” Tough Guy

Arms crossed over a puffer vest, chewing gum aggressively, and making intense eye contact with line actors. The Tough Guy wants everyone within a fifty-foot radius to know that this whole production is an amateur parlor trick and he is entirely unmoved.

He usually spends the first few scenes chuckling loudly to reassure his friends, offering condescending play-by-play commentary like, “Oh look, fake blood, very original.” That bravado holds up until a slider rounds the corner unexpectedly, triggering a guttural, pitch-defying squeak that he will spend the entire drive home desperately trying to explain away.

  • 💬 Signature Quote: “Bro, I saw you behind that curtain before you even moved.” (Spoken through rapid, shallow breaths).
  • 🧟 Tell Your Scare-Actors To: Focus on silence and proximity. Don’t jump…just tilt your head and step into his personal space until the posture crumbles.

3. The Professional Screamer

Honestly, this one is me. And if you’ve ever been through a haunt with me…I’m sorry for your eardrums.

We screamers have zero volume control and a lung capacity that defies modern medicine. We aren’t just screaming at the actors; we’re screaming at the antique wallpaper, the atmospheric ambient hum, and a loose hanging piece of burlap.

Our vocal cords operate at a frequency capable of shattering car windshields in the overflow parking lot. Actors don’t even need to deliver their rehearsed lines…they just step out of the shadows, and the Screamer unleashes five continuous seconds of raw, operatic terror, terrifying the three groups behind them who have no idea what’s actually happening.

  • 💬 Signature Quote: A continuous, deafening siren noise that registers on local seismic monitors.
  • 🧟 Tell Your Scare-Actors To: Offer a simple, polite wave. It produces the exact same decibel level as a full-throttle chainsaw charge.

4. The Flashlight Outlaw

Despite the six brightly painted warning signs, the pre-show safety audio, and the staff member who looked directly into their eyes three minutes ago to say “Keep your phones away,” the Outlaw simply cannot abide the darkness.

Somewhere around the blackout maze, the glowing white rectangle emerges. Suddenly, your carefully designed, moody lighting design is blown out by 1,000 lumens of harsh blue iPhone LED, ruining the scene for everyone in a ten-foot radius. They aren’t trying to record; they are desperately trying to ensure they don’t stub a toe on a baseboard.

  • 💬 Signature Quote: “I’m just using it to see the floor, I swear!”
  • 🧟 Tell Your Scare-Actors To: Step directly into the beam, block the path, and point them toward the darkness with zero mercy.

5. The Giggle-Crier

The emotional wiring in this guest’s brain has completely cross-circuited. Terror, amusement, and adrenaline have collided into a bizarre feedback loop of breathless laughter mixed with genuine weeping.

They are holding their face, tears streaming through their fingers, laughing hysterically while visibly trembling. Every scare restarts the cycle: a sharp gasp, followed by a tearful sob, followed by wheezing laughter. Are they having the time of their life? Are they experiencing a minor psychological crisis? Nobody knows—not even them.

  • 💬 Signature Quote: “Hahaha…oh god please…HAHAHA…make it stop…[sobbing]…this is so fun!”
  • 🧟 Tell Your Scare-Actors To: Keep their distance. Nobody wants to decipher which half of that reaction is winning.

6. The Shoe Loser

How does it happen? The world may never know. The trail is flat. The floorboards are secure. Yet somehow, this guest exits the final scene hobbling along in exactly one damp white tube sock.

The Shoe Loser will immediately approach the exit security team, looking confused and mildly embarrassed, holding up a single foot to ask if anyone can go fetch their left Nike from the butcher room. By midnight, your sweep crew will inevitably collect three single sneakers, two Crocs, a detached platform heel, and zero logical explanations. It’s not always a shoe…but they always leave something behind inside the haunt.

  • 💬 Signature Quote: “Hey man… is there any way somebody can check the cornfield for a size 10 slip-on Vans?”
  • 🧟 Tell Your Scare-Actors To: Check the corners during the post-shift sweep. Add it to the trophy pile at the front gate.

Surviving the Peak October Surge

Whether they’re screaming, laughing, running in circles, or limping away missing footwear, these are the crowds that keep the lights on and the blood pumping.

Tag your crew, share this in your staff group chat before Friday’s call time, and keep your sweep buckets ready for the sneaker collection. Happy Haunt Season!
