How many times have you watched a scary movie and thought, “How did they build that prop?” or “That lighting would be perfect for our clown room!”?
Since trade show season is right around the corner, this is the perfect time to get your ghoulish creative gears turning so you don’t blow their budget on impulse buys.
We’ve rounded up 12 of the newest (including some under-the-radar!) movies and shows from the last year to help you scout for inspiration. Grab the popcorn, take some notes, and get ready to turn these silver-screen scares into your 2026 reality.
Haunter’s Homework: As you watch these, keep a “Trade Show Scouting List.” If a movie has a specific fog effect you love, or a creature with a unique jaw movement, write it down! It makes finding the right vendor at the show ten times easier when you can say, “I want the vibe from the Bone Temple in 28 Years Later.”
🎬 The Big Screen: Blockbusters & Gothic Reimagining
1. Frankenstein (2025/2026)
With Guillermo del Toro behind this recent adaptation, the set design is a masterclass in “Victorian Decay.” Check out the laboratory textures and the use of practical prosthetics for inspiration on “reanimated” characters that go beyond the typical green skin and bolts.
2. The Bride! (Coming March 6, 2026)
This fresh, marvelously macabre take on the Bride of Frankenstein is set to be a visual feast. It’s perfect for haunters looking to refresh their “mad scientist” or “gothic romance” rooms with a more punk-rock, high-fashion horror aesthetic.
3. Sinners (2025/2026)
This vampire epic (starring Michael B. Jordan) won big at the BAFTAs for a reason. Its 1930s Jim Crow-era setting offers incredible inspiration for historical haunts, period-accurate costuming, and high-tension atmospheric lighting.
4. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026)
The “Rage Virus” is back! This is the ultimate inspiration for high-intensity, “fast zombie” actors. Watch the movement of the infected for actor training tips and look at the “Bone Temple” set design for ideas on post-apocalyptic primitive builds.
📺 Small Screen: Binge-Worthy Builds
5. Wednesday (Season 2, Released late 2025)
If you’re not caught up on this Netflix series, now is the time to start bingeing. This season introduces even more “outcasts” and creatures. Pay attention to the Nevermore Academy set dressing. It’s a gold mine for “dark academia” themes, which are huge in haunts right now.
6. The Beauty (January 2026)
This new series (starring Evan Peters) is about an obsession with physical perfection that turns horrific. It’s great inspiration for “distorted beauty” or “plastic surgery gone wrong” scenes, moving away from traditional rot and toward uncanny, unsettling perfection.
7. Widow’s Bay (Upcoming April 2026)
Set on a secluded, cursed New England island, this Apple TV+ show is perfect for haunters planning a “Fisherman’s Wharf” or “Cursed Village” theme. Look at the weathered wood textures and the “superstitious local” character archetypes.
8. It: Welcome to Derry (2025)
The prequel series to IT is a masterclass in small-town dread. For anyone running a clown-themed haunt, this provides a fresh look at how to make “Pennywise-style” scares work in different environments, like sewers or 1960s carnivals.
🕵️ Under the Radar: The “Deep Cuts” for Unique Ideas
9. The Mortuary Assistant (February 2026)
If you’re looking for a scene that stays with your guests long after they leave, keep an eye on The Mortuary Assistant (releasing this month!). I’m personally obsessed with the ‘quiet horror’ in this one. And I’ve never even played the video game it’s based on! While we all love a good high-startle animatronic, this film is a masterclass in atmospheric dread, using subtle environmental changes and blink-and-you’ll-miss-it scares.
10. Whistle (February 2026)
Centering around an ancient Aztec Death Whistle, this is a fantastic reference for audio-driven scares. If you’re looking to purchase new sound systems or triggers at a trade show, this movie shows how a single, terrifying sound can be the “hook” for an entire attraction.
11. Clown in a Cornfield (2025)
A satirical slasher that turns the classic “rural haunt” on its head. It’s great for farms and outdoor haunts looking to spice up their hayrides or corn mazes with high-energy, chaotic actor choreography.
12. Soulm8te (January 2026)
From the M3GAN universe, this “erotic AI thriller” is the perfect inspiration for a “Sci-Fi Horror” or “Glitch” room. It’s a great reminder that the scariest monsters sometimes look exactly like us—just a little too stiff.
If you’re heading to a trade show looking for ways to level up your haunt’s storytelling or ‘liminal space’ transitions, this is the one to watch for inspiration on tension-building. It proves that sometimes what isn’t jumping out at you is the scariest part of all!
